Alice Geirinhas
Born in Évora in 1964, Alice Geirinhas has a degree in Sculpture from FBAUL, a master's degree in Contemporary Art Practices from FBAUP, and a PhD in Contemporary Art from Colégio das Artes, Universidade de Coimbra. She taught illustration at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and at the Ar.Co. art school. She was a programmer and coordinator of the training area at Lisbon's Bedeteca (2001-2005). She received the Young Portuguese Filmmaker award at Cinanima 1990 with the short film "Uma História de Amor" ("A Love Story").
She is currently assistant professor in the Design and Multimedia course at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra and at the Colégio das Artes.
Her first solo exhibition, "A Nossa Necessidade de Consolo É Impossível de Satisfazer" ("Our Need for Comfort Is Impossible to Satisfy"), at Galeria Zé dos Bois, was followed by (among others), "Alice", Bedeteca de Lisboa; "Ce sex qu'est pas un", Museu do Neo-realismo, Vila Franca de Xira, "Chora", Gaivotas, Lisboa.
Her group exhibitions include: "Lisbon Re-producers of Meaning", SESC Rio - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Portugal: "30 Artists Under 40", The Stenersen Museum - Oslo, Norway; "Gender in Art: body, sexuality, identity and resistance", MNAC-MC- National Museum of Contemporary Art; "War as a Way of Seeing", MACE, Elvas; "Everything that is solid dissolves in the air", Berardo Museum, and The Philosophy of Money, City Museum, Lisbon, both with the artistic collective Sparring Partners (Alice Geirinhas, João Fonte Santa and Pedro Amaral). She is part of Girlschool, her most recent artistic collective dedicated to performative classes on art and sexuality together with Susana Mendes Silva.
Part of her graphic work is published in the book "Alice", Bedeteca de Lisboa (1999), of the published books highlights "Isto de Estar Vivo" by Luiz Pacheco Contraponto (2000) and the artist books, "A Nossa Necessidade de Consolo é Impossível de Satisfazer #2", Mimesis (2003), "Alice's Guest Book author's edition", 1 copy (2010), "The Cabinet of Dr Alice", Stolen Books (2014) and "Manifesto Visual", Stolen Books (2016).
