Drawings in the Sand

On April 29th, between 5pm and 7pm, the exhibition "Drawings in the Sand" will take place in the gallery of the Portuguese Screen Printing Center at CCB, which presents six new screen prints by José by Guimarães inspired by drawings in the sand of African tribes, mainly from the Quioco culture of Northeast Angola.

The launch will feature with the artist's presence and will take place with all necessary measures to guarantee the safety of visitors. 

The screen prints were created based on recent original projects by the artist who was involved in the entire process, from conception to design. signature.
They were made on 290 gr Tiepolo 100% cotton paper. being limited edition to just 199 numbered and signed copies.

José de Guimarães, exponent of contemporary Portuguese painting is there is He is very much an internationally renowned artist. His artistic expression as a whole is characterized by an aesthetic of fragmentation that has been asserting itself since the beginning of his career.
The artist never stopped reinventing himself and has always dedicated special attention to the graphic work, giving it a remarkable quality that this series documents, reflecting a baseline of contemporary art, since the avant-gardes of the 20th century, inaugurated by Picasso, in the wake of Gauguin: the relationship with primitive art.
The drawings in the sand of the Quioco tribes, drawings traced on the ground during conversations, synthetic ideograms of mental and symbolic schemes, are now inducers of Joséé de Guimarães, who has always been interested in African art.

According to text by António Fontinha in the catalog of works, these people are related to the Luchazi and Ngangela who live in Eastern Angola and in areas neighbors in the Northwest, Zambia and Congo (Zaire). Antnio Fontinha is son of Mário Fontinha, researcher who collected in the book Desenhos na Areia dos Quiocos do Nordeste de Angola, a vast set of drawings from these tribes, the content of which deserved a detailed analysis.
