Martim Brion (Lisbon, 1986) is considered one of the most promising names in contemporary art in Portugal. The son and grandson of two important cultural figures, Sofia Areal and António Areal, he grew up deeply embedded in the artistic world.
He earned a degree in International Relations and Political Science from De Montfort University in Leicester, United Kingdom. After working in Lisbon at the newspaper Público and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he moved to Madrid, where he completed a Master's in International Management at IE Business School.
He worked at Roland Berger Strategy Consultants in Frankfurt and Düsseldorf, Germany. After a brief return to Portugal, he relocated to London, where he studied Art and Business at the Sotheby’s Art Institute. He later worked at the Gagosian Gallery, Christie’s Auction House, and Sutton PR.
As an artist, he completed a semester-long course at the Royal College of Art and held his first exhibition in 2014 at the Politécnica dos Artistas Unidos space.
He has received several awards and grants, including the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Grant for Internationalization (2023/24) and the Culture Moves Europe grant, awarded by the European Union and the Goethe Institute (2023). His work is included in prominent collections such as the Museum für Konkrete Kunst and the Portuguese National Library.
Brion’s work combines various intersecting interests: from literary references and the search for polished, balanced sculptural forms to his visual diary expressed through photography, as well as a strong focus on digitally created artworks.
