All the works in the series "The Dreams of Faust" were painted by the artist, making each one a unique example.

Pedro Calapez (b. 1953) who lives and works in Lisbon, one of the most famous artists of his generation, has exhibited collectively since the 1970s and individually since 1982. His work has been be exhibited in galleries and museums both in Portugal and abroad.

In these individually intervened screen prints of his, inspired by the book Fausto by Fernando Pessoa, he offers us the plastic universe of his dreams that he himself describes: “A gray area, an obscure tone, an undefined wall, a limit without limit, translucent opacity: my dreams. Moments in which waking up does not happen and the dream does not take us back into its story, because at that moment the story stopped. I pull myself out of this nightmare, waking up with a start but with a vivid memory that the unknown will never be forgotten. achieved. I don't know if I'm trying the limits and I think of Faust.”

Unknown threshold of myth, of an ultimate knowledge that remains forbidden with expression in the labyrinth of forms and in the festive and mysterious universe of color. Gold, roses and blues shine through the nostalgic and obscure black grid and under the kind of veil that add to its fascination and enigma. Color seems to be the key to a world and an atmosphere that the painter associates with Faust, with his illusions of eternal youth. And yet, it is It is a truth that can be divined, that which only silence holds the secret, beyond words, taking shape in these works of great plastic and poetic mastery. A descent into the depths of the unconscious from which emerges a vivified soul capable of enjoying all the charm of nature and a life returned to itself.

Pedro Calapez

Born in Lisbon in 1953, the city where he lives and works.

He began his studies in civil engineering, transferring in 1976 to the Lisbon School of Fine Arts. He later attended the Artistic Training Course at the National Society of Fine Arts. While a student at the Faculty of Fine Arts, he worked as a professional photographer, dedicating himself more intensely to photography. painting from 1985 onwards. Between 1986 and 1998 he was a professor at Ar.Co. in Lisbon, having been responsible for the drawing and painting departments. He began participating in exhibitions in the 1970s, having held his first solo exhibition in 1982.

In the national context, Pedro Calapez is is one of the most recognized names, having emerged in the so-called decade of the «return to the world’ painting», the 80s, together with artists Pedro Cabrita Reis, José Pedro Croft, Rui Sanches, Rosa Carvalho and Ana Léon.

His work has been the subject of exhibitions in several galleries and museums both in Portugal and abroad, with particular emphasis on solo exhibitions: "Campo de Sombras", Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró, Mallorca (1997); "Madre Agua", Museo MEIAC, Badajoz and Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporaneo, Seville (2002); "Chosen Works", CAM- Fundação C.
