In the CPS Gallery (Portuguese Screen Printing Center) of the Belém Cultural Center, it opens on May 18th, Thursday at 6:30 pm, with the title “Papier Vivant” an exhibition by the renowned French artist Dominique Coffignier who was born in 1956 and has been exhibiting since 1988.

The exhibition brings together 20 engravings, lithographs and engravings intervened with collage; Recent editions created by the author at Atelier CPS in Lisbon. Two new editions will also be presented, engraving and lithography, under special conditions for CPS Members.

In his art the energy and brilliance of the lines unite with the light; intensity of color to express deep emotions and delicate feelings in abstract landscapes that are an invitation to play. enjoy the mystery and beauty of space. About the set currently on display in Lisbon, writes art critic Maria João Fernandes (AICA – International Association of Art Critics):

“The explosive and cosmic language, powerfully totalizing of Coffignier’s painting, is transfigured in his engravings intervened with collage, assuming a grammar that stages relations of force between lines, shapes, planes and colors in suspensions and unstable balances of dazzling newness. Drips, graffiti, writings from the visible, opening onto the invisible, to the surface. similar to what the famous poem by António Ramos Rosa suggests: “I write about a wall”:

[I write and the doors don't open./The rivers exist, and the sea in the street/exists. I write. And what do I expect?/I write on faded walls, on the white/surface of the wall. I write.]”[i]

These living papers are a score where the interior and exterior come together to convey to us the expression of movements and dreams in the magic of lines, oscillating shapes, powerful blacks and “reduced” earth tones and reds to restore us to a kind of symphony where the mysteries of Being and Space simultaneously echo.

A symphony that it is up to us to listen to and interpret in the work of Dominique Coffignier, a Master of contemporary art that today we have the privilege of knowing in the superb set of his graphic work, presented with the quality we have become accustomed to, by the Portuguese Screen Printing Center.”

Exhibition is open until the end of the year. June 18, 2017. Free entry.
