Bert Holvast

Born in Wedde, Holland, in 1953, Bert Holvast studied art in Den Bosch and Breda between 1977 and 1981. A year later, he held his first individual exhibition, still in Holland, and received the Prize of Europe, in Oostende, Belgium.

Since this first exhibition until now, he has carried out several others, usually with works from thematic series such as those he executed between 1982 and 1987 – "Yamaha" and "Kenny", twenty-four canvases based on the sport of motocross.

Between 1987 and 1998 his work focused on the theme of bullfighting and bullfighting, with two series entitled "A Arena" and "Sobre as Corridas Portuguesas". In 2002 he performed "A horse with no name" in Portugal and Spain. As can be seen, the themes of Bert Holvast's works call for a quick, vigorous and spontaneous drawing, an appeal to which the artist responds with simple lines, filled in by dots of ink that naturally flow through the support, which in global terms corresponds to compositions with movement that capture the fleeting moments they represent.
