The Centro Português de Serigrafia (CPS), in collaboration with the MUDE – Museum of Design, will present the new artist's book «Desenhos na Areia» by José de Guimarães on 23 October, at 6 pm, in the Museum's auditorium in Lisbon. This special edition brings together artistic screen printing and paper engineering, in collaboration with António Bajanca.

The presentation will be led by Bárbara Coutinho, Director of MUDE, and attended by José de Guimarães, co-author António Bajanca, and António Prates, João Prates and Alexandra Silvano, representing the Centro Português de Serigrafia.

During the event, the book will be available for purchase under special launch conditions exclusively for CPS Members, with the opportunity to obtain a personally dedicated copy.

Inspired by the sona, symbolic drawings traditionally traced in the sand by the Chokwe people of northeastern Angola, the book revisits a visual universe deeply connected to José de Guimarães' artistic journey. More than simple graphic representations, these ideograms serve as a means of transmitting stories, knowledge and collective memory, forming part of a cultural heritage that the artist has reinterpreted throughout his career.

Drawing on this imagery, seven original drawings by José de Guimarães take on a new dimension, becoming three-dimensional compositions through intricate pop-up mechanisms designed by António Bajanca. The result is a sculptural artist's book in which drawing transcends the surface of the paper, revealing itself through volume, movement and depth.

Exhibition at the Centro Cultural de Belém

Following its launch at MUDE, «Desenhos na Areia» will be featured in an exhibition at the CPS Gallery in the Centro Cultural de Belém, from 26 October to 8 November, offering the public another opportunity to discover this edition.

On 7 November, at 5 pm, the exhibition's finissage will take place as part of the Lisbon Art Weekend 2026 programme. The exhibition will remain open until 8 November.
