Carlos Carreiro

Born in 1946, in Ponta Delgada, Azores, Carlos Carreiro was a professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Porto and has received several awards.

In 1976 he formed the Puzzle Group with Graça Morais, Jaime Silva, Dário Alves, Albuquerque Mendes, Pedro Rocha, Fernando Pinto Coelho, João Dixo and Armando Azevedo.

He participated, in Portugal and abroad, in more than 300 collective exhibitions, such as Arco 98, Madrid and Art Cologne 01. He has held several individual exhibitions in Portugal and abroad, in addition to being present in numerous private collections and in many public organizations in the Azores, such as the Regional Legislative Assembly of the Azores. Of the galleries where he has exhibited, the following stand out: Zen, JN, 111, Modulo, EG, Bertrand, Roma e Pavia, Diagonal, Diagonale (Paris), among others.

In 1991/92, with the support of the Regional Directorate for Culture, an anthological exhibition was organized, marking the 25 years of the artist's career. The exhibition toured the cities of Angra do Heroísmo, Ponta Delgada, Horta, Lisbon, Porto, Amarante, Coimbra, Gondomar, S. João da Madeira and Aveiro. In 2003, a small anthological exhibition was held in the Gallery of the Municipal Cultural Center of Ponta Delgada, a space that received his work again in 2005, as part of a solo exhibition.

His painting is unmistakable due to his own style, in an imaginary where fantasy, humour and commentary prevail in a true play of light and concepts. He received several awards including, in 1984, the George Orwell Honorable Mention from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, in 1996, the National Painting Prize - 2nd AIP Art Biennial - and, in 1997, the BMW Art Car Prize Baviera, highlighted by the painting of a BMW, which is on public display at the Bavarian Museum.

On June 10, 2006, he was awarded by the President of the Republic with the rank of Grand Officer of the Order of Merit, at the commemorative ceremony in Angra do Heroísmo.
